Nose Job

Rhinoplasty or “nose job” is a surgical procedure to aesthetically refine the nose.  Areas that are most commonly corrected are the dorsal hump, tip refinement lift, if necessary, and narrowing the nose to give a more aquiline appearance.

During your initial consultation Dr van der Poel will be able to get a good idea of your concerns as well as your expectations of the procedure.  An open or closed Rhinoplasty can be performed.  Closed Rhinoplasties are more commonly performed so as to prevent scarring of the columella and delayed healing.   Open Rhinoplasties are used for “difficult tips”.

After the procedure plugs are placed in the nose overnight and you would have a splint on your nose for five days.  Your final result is only visible once all the swelling has gone which could take three to five months, or even longer. The majority of the swelling, however, is gone after six weeks. Bruising of the lower eyelids from the in-fracture is usually gone after a week to ten days. The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic. You will recover overnight in hospital and be given pain medication to take home.

Dr van der Poel likes to see the patient for a second consultation in the week prior to the procedure to discuss any last-minute questions. Dr van der Poel takes time during his consultations to listen to your concerns and ensure that you are both on the same page.

You will see Dr van der Poel five days following the procedure to remove your splint, thereafter every two weeks or as required.  When you make your booking you will be given pre-operative instructions which will include medications and supplements to avoid prior to surgery since they can increase bleeding.  Should you have any concerns or questions you are welcome to call the rooms or send an email and we will be happy to assist.
