The procedure is used essentially to increase the volume of the breasts, either for cosmetic reasons or for an underdeveloped breast.

 

When you first consult with Dr van der Poel he gets an idea of the size you have in mind.  This is discussed and a range of implant sizes is agreed upon, this range is usually about three implants which increase in volume slightly.  Dr van der Poel likes to see the patient for a second consultation in the week prior to the procedure to discuss any last- minute questions. Dr van der Poel takes time during his consultations to listen to your concerns and ensure that you are both on the same page.

 

Once on the table he can more accurately assess which implant in the range would be best suited to your frame.  Microtextured Gummy Bear silicone implants are generally used as they feel softer and more natural. Dr van der Poel is known for a natural looking Breast Augmentation.

 

The procedure is performed by an incision in the fold of the breast (infra-mammary) and a pocket is developed under the Pectoralis Major muscle where the implant is positioned.  This is performed under general anaesthetic as an in-patient.

 

You would recover overnight in hospital, the following morning the drains are removed and you will return home with a small dressing over the incision.  You will be given pain medication to take home before leaving the hospital.  Initially a wireless bra can be worn for comfort.  The scar is taped weekly for four weeks following the procedure, this is done to prevent the scar from stretching.  We recommend the RegimA Scar repair cream which is stocked at our rooms, this would be started six weeks post-operatively.  Dr van der Poel will advise you when to start massaging the breasts.  You would be fit to return to work a week to ten days following the procedure.
